Surface Laptop Studio – Gear up your Creativity

Imagined a Surface device that is so powerful to handle all your crazy stuff with ease and at the same time looks extremely sleek and beautiful. The new Surface laptop Studio from Microsoft has picked all the features of a great high-end laptop and blended it well.

Surface Laptop Studio is the new inclusion in the surface lineup which Microsoft announced on 22nd September 2021 and is now available worldwide. The Surface laptop Studio is a dual-purpose laptop specially created for premium users who wants creativity and productivity at an extreme level.

From the name, you already understand it’s a multipurpose device and you can use it for different purposes. Here you get three different modes in one form factor, all in one device.

You have the standard laptop mode for conventional use, then you have the halfway folded-down easel setup, where you’re covering the keyboard but you still have a trackpad and the touch screen It’s called Stage Mode. And then you have a completely folded flat tablet set up for Studio mode.

According to Microsoft surface, the laptop studio is the most powerful surface device they have ever built and they have worked on this concept for years and finally launched the device which completely redefined the experience of power users. Foam factor, design, Hinge, and internal components all are upgraded for modern cutting edge computing.

The convertible display of Surface Laptop Studio is similar to what we’ve seen from HP’s Elite Folio and Acer’s ConceptD Ezel series laptops. This design concept allows Microsoft to add more powerful hardware components at the base and leaves the display lightweight and easily adjustable.

The new device runs on Windows 11, the brand new operating system from Microsoft. And with the combination of new hardware and software, the new Surface Laptop Studio can perform equally well in schoolwork, digital art, and gaming.

The Price and Availability of Surface Laptop Studio:

Surface laptop Studio Design and Display:

Design-wise Surface Laptop Studio looks like a mixture of the Surface Laptop and Surface Studio and I must say the design looks pretty unique and well-polished too.

The dimension 12.72” x 8.98” x 0.746” ( 323.28 mm x 228.32 mm x 18.94 mm ) is very compact and you can easily carry the device anywhere.

From outside to inside the whole body and casing are made up of magnesium and aluminum and available only in one Platinum color.

The bottom half looks like two tablets stacked together, one in the center and one slightly on the outside, and that gives you a very thin edge to hold on to but a little more vertical space in the center to fit in more powerful hardware.

The ventilation grills are located at the bottom and Microsoft intelligently placed the grills at the bottom which makes the ventilation process easier without any interruption. And the Airflow process is also very unique it’s sucked and Blows the air from both sides and the fans are produced almost zero noise.

The device is not too heavyweight only 1.7 Kg 3.8 pounds for the i5 model and 1.8 Kg 4 pounds for the i7 model. The i7 model is a half-pound heavier than the 15-inch surface laptop and it’s clearly not trying to be ultra-portable but it also feels like Microsoft is trying hard not to make this feel like a very heavy gaming notebook.

On the right side we have a 3.5 mm headphone jack and surface power connector port and on the left just two USB type C 4.0 connectors also used as a thunderbolt 4.0 port for faster data transfer and external display support.

Underneath the front section, there is a place for the Surface Slim Pen 2, and the powerful magnet helps the stylus to stay attached to the device and charged automatically when needed.

Most of the design is looks like a Macbook pro where it resembles the same matte silver chassis with thick black bezels around the screen, soft gray plastic keys in the keyboard, and a haptic touchpad laid out below them. Only the bottom part and hinge mechanism are different.

The most interesting part of this device is the all-new 14.4-inch Pixelsence Flow display (2400X1600) that supports up to a 120Hz refresh rate and has the Dolby Vision for a better viewing experience in every situation.

This Display is attached with a fabric-covered hinge running lengthwise across the middle which lets you pull the screen’s bottom edge out toward you and give you two additional viewing options the stage mode and Studio mode.

The high refresh rate always helps you to play games at a high framerate and do your creative artwork using the surface slim pen2. And having a screen that refreshes faster means it can respond to inputs faster, and thus the experience of sketching or writing on the screen should feel smoother.

Consuming multimedia content is very satisfying on this device where all the small details are visible and you can play 4K and HDR content flawlessly. The higher refresh rate also helps those who need to remain active for a long period of time in front of the screen, the display minimizing the eye strain.

The top bezel at the front is much thicker compared to the side ones and it consists of a 2 Megapixel 1080p front-facing camera which is also used for Windows Hello face authentication. There is an ambient light sensor present to automatically adjust the screen lighting.

Performance and Battery Life:

For the first time, Microsoft opted for powerful hardware for a surface device, and the Surface laptop Studio is powered by Quad Core 11th Gen Intel i5 and i7 processors.

The entry-level model comes with the i5 -11300H based Quad Core CPU and Intel Iris X series GPU. It performs well in all conditions, but if you want extreme performance then the i7- 11370H model is also present where you get all the computing powers along with NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™3050 Ti  laptop GPU with 4GB GDDR6 GPU memory.

The H35 processors are new to Intel’s 11th-generation lineup and produced a great performance in a more compact form factor. That’s why the new Surface laptop Studio is very thin and light but produced a way better performance than Surface Book 3.

This Quad-Core Cpu is great for day-to-day work and you never feel any workloads in this machine even if you’re working on multiple programs at once. Browsing with multiple tabs and editing content online, Video rendering, Gaming, and Playing HDR content at max resolution all things are done smoothly and you never feel any pause or delay even if you run the machine for hours.

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 Ti has enough power to run even relatively recent 3D games like Forza Horizon 4Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Battlefield 5, Gears 5  and it Controls them well. Although the games are optimized for a 1080p display and give you 66 frames per second refresh rate. The images look different if you’re coming from a 4K resolution console but overall the experience is good.

However, the Laptop Studio’s SSD is one of the fastest we’ve seen yet, it offers a 1050 Mbps file transfer rate which is faster than the Dell XPS 15 OLED (825.6 Mbps) but not as fast as a high-end gaming laptop like the Razer Blade 15 Advanced 11th Gen (1795 Mbps).

But Microsoft should go for six or Eight-core CPUs because in this price range other competitors are offering much stronger hardware at the same or even lower price point.

So I think it’s kind of limits the hardware because Dell can squeeze a six-core CPU into the XPS 13 lineup which is incredibly thin and extremely fast and even an eight-core processor in other productivity notebooks like XPS 15.

Battery Life:

Surface laptop Studio offers a great battery life thanks to the inclusion of a large cell and optimization in the device hardware. Microsoft claims that you can get up to 18 or 19 hours of backup on a single charge, depending on whether you buy the Core i5 or i7.

After a full day with intensive testing like Browing over Wifi, watching HDR content at Max Brightness, Playing graphics intense games, Using the camera for video calls, Playing songs at the max sound the Studio lasts for 8 and half hours which is pretty impressive.

Camera, Audio, and Surface ports:

The Webcam is very impressive and captures some good quality photos and if you’re using the device for video calls then you’ll be satisfied with the image quality it offers.

The camera sensor is 2 megapixels but produced good quality images where all the colors and details remain intact. You can also use the built-in IR camera for facial authentication via Windows Hello.

Microsoft claims the Facial Login should be easier than ever because the Surface Laptop Studio supports Windows Hello 2.0, it helps facial recognition faster and easier, even if you’re wearing a mask or glasses, the device intelligently remembers you and lets you in without any hustle.

In terms of sound and audio, the Surface laptop studio added four speakers two subwoofers, and two tweeters, the subwoofer fires through the side, while the tweeters fire up through the keyboard itself. It also has a nice quality microphone.

It delivers louder, richer audio with better bass than I expected from a laptop and it can be loud enough if runs at full volume. The sound quality is good but the bass is less compared to other laptops but here is a twist if you use the device in laptop mode it sounds normal but if you tilt the display in Stage mode or Studio mode the sound suppresses and gives you a kind of vacuum effect.

The microphone isn’t quite as incredible, but it’s more than good enough that you don’t need to rush for a headset just to take that last-minute meeting.

Microsoft is finally including Thunderbolt in its premium products. You get two Thunderbolt 4/USB-C ports on the left side of the laptop, and a headphone jack and Surface Connect port on the right side.

The Thunderbolt support means you can connect the Surface Laptop Studio to multiple 4K displays, use high-speed external storage, or even use an external GPU enclosure to turn this device into a full gaming PC.

Its much appreciated if Microsoft offers USB type C charging along with a thunderbolt port because Dell XPS 15 OLED has USB-C ports on either side, which makes it convenient to plug in your charger at whatever angle is most comfortable for you.

Keyboard, Touchpad, and Touchscreen:

Here in the Surface Laptop Studio Microsoft brought over one of the Surface Book 3’s best features that fabulous keyboard, It’s wide enough so your finger won’t search for the keys and at the same time very responsive. It’s one of the best keyboards I’ve ever felt on a laptop.

Microsoft is also moving over to a precision haptic touchpad with the laptop studio which means it has no moving parts it just kind of gives you the sense of clicking when you press down on it with haptic feedback. it’s accurate and easy to use, and you have no problem using gesture commands to navigate through Windows 11.

The Studio’s touchscreen is equally effective, it’s very responsive and works well with the new Surface Slim Pen2. Taping, Swiping, Clicking is very easy with this new stylus and even great for writing and drawing on the Whiteboard. The high refresh rate and the new intelligent sensor give you haptic feedback when dragging or drawing something.

Surface Slim Pen2:

If you planning to buy a Surface Laptop Studio then the Surface Slim Pen2 is a must-have accessory for you because it gives you the freedom to use the touchscreen at its full potential.

The stylus charges and resides at the bottom base and includes a built-in haptic motor that attempts to replicate the feeling of writing on paper. This new stylus also has reduced latency and better precision, thanks to a redesigned tip.

The New Surface Slim Pen 2 has an improved sharper tip that is more accurate and feels great on the display. It leverages the tactile signal supported by Windows 11 and a custom Microsoft G6 processor to enhance the natural feel and interactions of the pen through an added haptic motor.

A sharper pen tip and an improved design let you approach the screen at a perfect 77° tilt for ultra-precise shading and an exceptional 4,096 points of pressure sensitivity.

The Slim Pen  2 is priced at $129.99 and heavily complements your new Surface Laptop Studio.

Microsoft Ocean Plastic Mouse:

Additionally, if you want a separate physical mouse to operate with Surface Laptop Studio then the newly launched Ocean Plastic Mouse would be a great choice.

The Compact, modern design fits comfortably in your hand and Precise navigation work across documents and websites with a dedicated scroll wheel.

It supports Bluetooth version 4.0 and connects easily with your surface device and any other Bluetooth-enabled device. The outer shell is made with 20% recycled ocean plastic available in Seashell color and is not expensive costs you only $25.

Connects to your Windows 11 Home/Pro and Windows 10/8.1 laptop right out of the box when you enable Swift Pair. The Imaging rate is dynamically adaptable to 4000 frames per second and the tracking speed is Up to 30 inches (762 millimeters) per second.

Should the Surface Laptop Studio the right choice for You?

Microsoft mentions that the Surface Laptop Studio is not for everyone and they created this device specifically for those individuals who need precise accuracy and power in their creative work.

They claim it’s the most powerful Surface ever created from the inside out and you have the most satisfying experience when using it. The device is well-built and reasonably powerful, with a nice bright screen, great speakers, and a battery good enough to see you through a day at work.

Although Microsoft doesn’t want to call surface Laptop Studio a Gaming laptop and they claim it’s mainly created for Creators and Artists who want a thin lightweight device for all their creative needs.

But I know a lot of creative professionals and media persons and all they want is power. and even if the device is heavier and bulky but produced better outputs they can stick to that no matter how it looks.

Microsoft wants to give creators the freedom to make whatever they want without inhibition, but we still haven’t seen it launch a laptop that can handle creative workloads as well as even a gaming laptop.

At the end of the day, this is a set of hardware that’s going to be excellent for illustrators and other similar artists, but Microsoft already has a ton of hardware that specifically targets those people, and the Surface Pro 8 is probably a better choice for them.

  1. My boyfriend bought me a new one last month, I use it mostly for my video game.

I wouldn’t say that performance is a problem for the Surface Laptop Studio. We’ll get into the actual numbers below, but the short version is that the system is just fine for design work and light gaming, and its quad-core Intel processors and the dedicated Nvidia graphics options complement each other well. But performance is definitely where the Laptop Studio falls short compared to other similarly priced thin-and-light workstation laptops.

    1. Thanks for sharing your experience with the device and I absolutely agreed with you on this price point everyone should expect a more powerful device that performs equally well in gaming as well as the artwork. Although I think with some upcoming updates in windows 11 the overall performance should improve.
