Zorin OS is a Ubuntu-based Linux operating system specifically made for beginners who want to migrate from Windows and iOS without typing any commands in the terminal. Zorin OS has one of the easiest installations and everything appears clearly in front of you.
Today Linux powers everything from the U.S. Department of Defense to the International Space Station, to most of the world’s Internet servers and supercomputers and the reason is it’s fast, reliable, versatile, and super secure, so it’s resistant to viruses.
Zorin OS built upon the Open Source kernel means it’s extremely flexible and gives everyone the power to do anything with their computer. Although the operating system is combined with many tools and utilities still the Zorin Developers keep it lightweight and responsive.
After installation, you find the OS extremely handy, and playing with the apps or installing them is super easy with the visual instruction are more like windows/mac OS even first-time users loves it.
In addition, Zorin OS is easy to use, so you don’t have to learn techniques to get started. No matter whether the desktop is Windows, macOS, or Linux, you can change it to an environment that you are familiar with with the help of the Zorin Appearance app.
This is the all-new Zorin OS 16. The system that is loved by millions is now reborn with stunning new features, impressive improvements in design, and a whole new world of apps that will transform how you experience your computer. I have been using the new version for a month now and like it.
So let’s jump right in and have a look at what’s new, the big changes, the performance, the new software library, and the ultimate features set that make Zorin OS 16, possibly the best computer operating system today.
User Interface of Zorin OS 16:
This is one area where Zorin OS gathered too many marks and they continue the same tradition by providing one of the best interfaces here. Three things make Zorin desktop outstanding. Simplicity, subtlety, and elegance.
Zorin OS 16 brings many refinements and polishing touches. The desktop looks fantastic with this new update, it just ups the game with refinements in the theme, desktop animations, and a few new things that together make it all so good on the eye.
Zorin OS features a modified GNOME desktop. The desktop is super clean and looks gorgeous right out of the box. This desktop layout is familiar to everybody and this makes it easy for even Linux newcomers to start using Zorin.
One look at the screen and you just know where everything is, and how to navigate this system. We get the Windows 7 layout here, which is probably the best desktop interface, to date.
This menu here is organized and this quick search is a gem for productivity. Favorites are pinned here for quick access and then there’s the tray with quick controls and a calendar.
The theme has been improved with a subtle gradient color scheme which adds a premium touch to everything. And this is available in 6 different flavors. So there’s something for everybody. All the applications here look uniform and polished with this theme.
Zorin Appearance lets you choose from 4 different pre-configured layouts which are just as refined. All the major desktop layouts are available here and are activated with a single click. This makes Zorin perfect for you no matter what your desktop preferences are.
Inside Interface, there is a new design called Jelly Mode that changes the layout of icons and windows. Once enabled, when a window is moved (either by you moving it, resizing it, or minimizing it), it wobbles as though it were made of, you guessed it, jelly.
Overall, Zorin OS 16 looks stunning on laptops as well as desktops all while being ridiculously simple to use and get started with. Then there’s a choice for you to customize Zorin to what suits you the best.
Software Availability of Zorin OS 16:
How much productivity and utility software its have or can run by an Operating System is one vital aspect and thankfully we have a wide range of software supports in Zorin.
The software availability is where Zorin OS 16 scores a major win over other Linux distros. Then there are a few bonuses that are just mind-blowing.
Firstly, Zorin 16 is based on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, which brings in a vast repository of the latest, well-tested packages. Now many software vendors test and package their software for Ubuntu so this ensures that this software will be installable on Zorin in a quick, convenient, and secure way, and after installation, they’ll be working flawlessly.
Then, Zorin 16 ships with Flathub integration. Flathub is the biggest library of modern flatpak apps. This allows you to install the latest and greatest of all the software with enhanced privacy and better than before stability.
Flatpaks are flawless in the sense that they’ll work without any issues. They are packaged with their dependencies and necessary libraries to ensure an impeccable user experience. They work pretty without any hiccups.
Zorin 16 also gives us snaps, which are yet another set of modern packaged apps pioneered by Ubuntu’s parent Canonical. Ubuntu has been doing great work with snaps and has taken a solid stance there which has resulted in many top software vendors like Google bringing their software and tools to Linux.
Zorin fully takes advantage of this and supports snaps out of the box. Zorin 16 supports native .deb packaging, flatpaks, and snaps.
The Software Store:
This software store here is clean and organized. It’s flourishing with amazing apps across categories. Any software you want can be installed in any format you want by selecting it here.
Pop OS and Zorin are the only 2 distros that represent apps from multiple package managers systematically and cleanly.
Three package managers and so much complexity here under the hood, but all the user sees is a clean, organized, and easy-to-use software store.
Windows App Support:
Since Zorin OS is targeted at Windows users, Zorin OS developers have implemented an ingenious feature that kicks in as soon as you try to open or install a windows application.
When you download and click on a .exe or .msi file that runs only on windows, Zorin OS immediately asks if it should install Windows app support. Which are WINE and some additional things that let you run Windows apps on Linux.
We know WINE is not perfect, it is capable of running many Windows applications without issues. If you choose this, WINE, PlayONLinux, and some new supporting components will be installed. Then the windows executable file will run.
But the real genius comes next. When you download a windows application from the internet and click on the file, Zorin OS checks if that particular application is available for Linux natively. And if it is, it gives you a choice to install it natively using the software store if not then you can run the downloaded file using Wine.
Having this flexibility is better in every way it gives you a wonderful compatibility option which I never heard of any OS that does so beautifully.
Although a lot is happening in the background Zorin makes every move transparent and You still know what’s happening in your system. But you are not overwhelmed by the complexities and you have the power to choose what is working for you.
Pretty straightforward approach and this is priceless for a Linux newcomer. I’m sure many experienced Linux users too would appreciate the simplicity here.
Software Availability wise, Zorin OS 16 has got it all. Snaps, Flatpaks, Ubuntu repositories, Windows app support and to top it all off, an amazing software store that is a delight to use.
Performance of Zorin OS 16:
In Zorin OS 16, speed has been given top priority, so the desktop runs snappier on a wide range of hardware. At every level of the operating system, there are performance improvements that boost the overall productivity.
The system is fluid and smooth and everything feels very responsive here. App opening times are good. But If you’re using a hard disk drive, installing apps in .deb format would be better for app opening speeds when compared to snaps or flatpacks.
The system performs well on even mid-range laptops and desktops. Performance-wise, there are no complaints. But if you are using older or lower-powered devices, I highly recommend Zorin Lite.
Zorin provides a Lite variant which comes with all the goodness of the Standard Zorin OS but with a stronger emphasis on performance, mainly on older and low-powered devices.
Zorin Lite features the Xfce desktop environment but looks very modern and similar to the Zorin OS Core version. This is one of the best-looking Xfce distros today. Right now Zorin OS Lite is on version number 15.3. The newest update is expected to be out in the coming months.
Overall, Performance-wise, Zorin 16 will leave you happy and smiling. And Lite version is a great resuscitator for old devices.
Zorin OS presents itself as a practical alternative for Windows and macOS.
Stability of Zorin OS 16:
This is one area you have to consider when you’re not just targeting the tech-savvy Linux user base but the whole general mass. This is exactly where Zorin’s Ubuntu lineage brings in a huge advantage.
Ubuntu was the original Linux for humans. Ubuntu made Linux accessible and usable for everybody. Zorin OS not only uses this amazing base to build on but also improves upon it.
Ubuntu is one of the highest used operating systems for high priority, multi-million dollar servers. So it is extensively tested and highly polished. Zorin uses this dependable base and couples a high convenience user interface with it.
This makes Zorin OS one of the most dependable and usable operating systems in the world right now. The Zorin OS 16 will be fully supported till April 2025. So you’ll be covered for a long time.
Usability Of Zorin OS 16:
And talking about usability, I’m sure you’re already convinced and intrigued by the simple yet stunning interface and features like Windows app support that make the switch from Windows to Linux easier.
There’s just so much more here that makes using your computer a better experience than other operating systems.
Zorin Connect is another fantastic usability feature that I loved. You get out-of-the-box support to connect your
android phone to your Zorin PC and this allows us to do things like getting notifications on the Zorin desktop, sending messages from PC, sharing files and links between devices, and also using your mobile phone as a remote control for your PC.
Zorin OS 16 comes with its own Sound Recorder app that makes it easy to record audio and speech and play it back. It is handy for creating voice memos or producing podcasts as adapts to your workflow and makes recording audio effortless.
The multitouch touchpad gestures added to Zorin OS 16 let you move between your apps and workspaces by swiping four fingers up or down. Pinch on the touchpad with three fingers to open the activities overview and see every app running on your workspaces.
Zorin 16 is highly recommended for students, software developers, businesses, schools and colleges, and other professional use.
Gaming in Zorin OS 16:
Zorin takes your gaming experience to another height. Firstly, AMD, Intel integrated and even NVIDIA optimal drivers are preinstalled so you’re getting the best possible performance right out of the box.
Then, Zorin provides a streamlined gaming experience with its windows app support. When we try to install a windows exclusive game, Zorin OS checks Lutris and PlayOnLinux databases and lets us install it with tried and tested optimal settings.
So here, for many games, you can just install them as you’d on windows. Zorin developers have done an extraordinary job with how the OS deals with Windows apps and games, and this feature will be highly appreciated, mainly by newcomers.
Additionally, there are Steam support and Steam’s proton feature which have changed the gaming scene on Linux. Most of the new games are available on Steams and they’re working pretty well here without any issue.
Some users are reported having issues using Steam but as I don’t play heavy graphic intensive games so for light to mid-level games are working fine for me.
